Short Story Contest!

Annyeonghaseyo, my peonies! (Annyeonghaseyo means hello in Korean. I wanted to spice things up. πŸ˜„)

So… you might be wondering about the title of this article. πŸ˜‰

All right, yes, I’m hosting a short story contest! YAY!!!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ I’ve seen others around the blogosphere host contests, and I wanted to have one of my own. So let’s get into the nitty-gritty of things!

~~~~~
The Rules
All right, everyone, like most contests do, this short story contest has some ground rules that must be followed. If your content does not follow these rules, you will unfortunately be disqualified. Here are the rules:
~~~~~

  • Your story cannot exceed 5,000 words.
  • Your story must be created based on one of the prompts in this post.
  • Your story cannot have any profanities whatsoever, not even the first part of a curse word (however, saying a character “cursed” is allowed).
  • Your story cannot take God’s name in vain in any way.
  • Your story cannot have immoral/graphic content. Mild violence is allowed, but please keep in mind that I am a Christian minor and don’t want to read explicit content. Use this as a guideline for your story.
  • Your story must be submitted by Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021 (updated due date). The form will close to entries after this day. The winners of the contest will be notified within a week, and the first of the winning stories will be published on Monday, Nov. 8, 2021 (updated date).

The Judging Criteria & Prizes

There will be three chosen winners (first, second and third place) to this contest based on their entries. Here are the criteria for judging:

~~~~~
  • How well the prompt was incorporated
  • How well the story keeps interest
  • Overall writing quality
  • Creativity
  • Character depth
  • Spelling & grammar
~~~~~

And here are the prizes for winning the contest. (Forgive me, I can’t do anything too, too big, but I hope that you’ll still enter. 😁) Please don’t feel bad if you don’t win the contest; everyone has room to improve and I can still give you feedback if you wish.

The first-place prizes

  • Have the first-place story published on my blog (unless otherwise indicated; you have all rights to your work)
  • Decide the topic for the next blog post I write
  • An author interview on my blog (unless otherwise indicated)
  • A graphic/collage made for your story
  • A drawing of one of the characters from the story

The second-place prizes

  • Have the second-place story published on my blog, a day after the first-place story (unless otherwise indicated; you have all rights to your work)
  • Decide a topic for a future blog post
  • A guest post on my blog (unless otherwise indicated)

The third-place prizes

  • Have the third-place story published on my blog, a day after the second-place story (unless otherwise indicated; you have all rights to your work)
  • A guest post on my blog (unless otherwise indicated)

The Prompts

Now onto the fun part: the prompts themselves! Choose one of these three to construct your story from. Note: these prompts are all products of my imagination.

Prompt 1: He looked down at his shoesβ€”the old familiar neon yellow high-tops. It was a surprise to me that he still wore them.

Prompt 2: I looked out the window, and euphoria quickly consumed me when I saw what was outside.

Prompt 3: “I can’t believe it. I’ve been doing it wrong this entire time!” she wailed, looking at the object in her hands.

Submission Form

Here’s the link for the story submission form! Note that this form will close after Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021 (updated date). Please upload your story in the form of a Google Doc link or a Google Drive file link. If a Google Doc, make sure permissions are set to “anyone can access”.

Thank you all for reading this post! This wraps up the guidelines of my short story contest. I dearly hope you all will enter! Please share this post with your writer friends or anyone who you think might enjoy writing a short story, or blog about this contest if you wish. I look forward to reading your entries!

  1. *gasps* *smiles* No joke, I was looking for a contest to enter the other day!! Yay!!! *dances around* You will 10000000% see my entry!! 😁 Ooh, and I love the prompt idea! Quick question: do I have to include the exact words in my story or just base it around the general idea of the prompt?
    I’m so excited! Can’t wait! πŸ˜€
